About this spot
Calf & Cow refers to two large rock formations that rise from the ocean floor and even break the surface of the sea — often thought to resemble a whale “cow” and her smaller “calf.” This is considered one of St. Thomas’s most iconic dive sites, ideal for beginner to intermediate divers and also very fun for snorkelers. Swim-through tunnels & archways: The Cow Rock area features a maze of swim-throughs and cave-like passages — great for underwater exploration. Depth: Typically relatively shallow (around 20–45 ft / 6–14 m), excellent visibility, and a great location for photographers. The champagne cork - When you dive Cow Rock (max ~45 ft / 14 m), the route through the rock includes several swim-throughs and tunnels. One of these ends in a vertical shaft or hole straight up toward the reef top: • Calm conditions: It’s an easy chimney-like passage to ascend through (with proper buoyancy control). • With wave action or surge: The surge pushes water up through this vertical slot, which can feel like you’re riding a brief natural elevator up and out of the tunnel — hence the cork analogy. • Best experienced is with a guide: Local dive guides know the exact spots and conditions to hit the water just right.
