About this spot
Good spot for fishing. Also the home of Old Crusty. In the summer of 1653, the settlers on OB were introduced to "Old Crusty"—a monstrous, skull-encrusted oyster that preyed on the livestock of Peter Wright’s settlers and the Matinecock people. Realizing neither steel nor stone alone could pierce its armor, Chief Tackapausha and the settlers formed a desperate alliance. Under a moonless sky, the Matinecock lured the beast to the surface with rhythmic paddling. As the mountain of barnacles rose to breathe, the settlers jammed a spiked oak timber into its massive hinge, locking its maw open. The alliance unleashed a volley of flaming arrows and musket fire into its soft interior until the pond turned a frothing gray. Old Crusty sank into the silt, leaving behind "pearls"—calcified pieces of a monster’s heart that may still be waiting to wake.
