About this spot
Salt Island became famous in the 18th and 19th centuries for its salt ponds, where residents harvested and exported sea salt across the Caribbean. After the RMS Rhone shipwreck in 1867, local tradition says Queen Victoria allowed islanders to remain there in exchange for a yearly tribute of one pound of salt. The annual “Breaking of the Pond” salt harvest became a major community celebration. The salt industry later declined in the mid-20th century, and today the uninhabited island is best known for its history, sailing, diving, and the nearby Rhone wreck. 🏝️ From the beach take a short walk to the salt pond, where you can collect your own salt crystals and view the historic ruins once home to the island’s residents
