About this spot
Eagle Shoal is a lesser-known offshore reef just south of St. John, loved by locals and captains for its clear water, healthy coral, and big-fish energy. What you’ll see • Spotted eagle rays (especially cruising the drop-off) • Sea turtles, southern stingrays • Barracuda, jacks, occasional reef sharks • Colorful hard & soft corals, sponges, and schooling reef fish Conditions & depth • Depth: ~20–60+ ft (snorkel the shallows; scuba the edges) • Water: Typically very clear, best on calm days • Current: Can run—timing matters Access • Boat-only site (no shore access) • Often paired with nearby snorkel stops on a half-day charter • Best when seas are light and visibility is up Pro tips • Early morning = calmer water and better ray sightings • If snorkeling, stay on the up-current side and drift back with the boat following • Scuba divers: check the outer ledge for pelagics
